On 20 October 2006 the Magyar Nemzeti Bank issued 2 million HUF 50 coins to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence.

The side of the coin showing its face value is the same as the HUF 50 coin currently in circulation, while the other side shows the House of Parliament from the Danube with the Hungarian national flag with a hole cut in its centre in the foreground.

The new side of the coin was designed by István Kósa.

The coin is made of an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighs 7.7 grams, and has a diameter of 27.4 mm and a smooth edge.

12,000 coins from the first day minting are for sale in gift packaging together with the HUF 500 banknote also released on 20 October 2006 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence.
