1 October 2015

The Magyar Nemzeti Bank will issue a silver collector coin with a face value of HUF 5,000 and a non-ferrous metal coin with a face value of HUF 2,000 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Kálmán Széll.

The collector coins are legal tender. The design of both collector coins will be identical, with the value numerals being the only difference. The obverse of the collector coins features a stylised representation of the Elisabeth Bridge as a main motif, built during Kálmán Széll’s term as Hungary’s Prime Minister. The Bridge, with a central opening of 290 metres and crossing the river without a pier footing, was a world sensation at the time of its construction. In 1945, it was demolished during the withdrawal of German troops. In addition, the obverse features the following design elements: the upper legend ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’ in the centre, the value numerals ‘2000 FORINT’ and ‘5000 FORINT’ below the representation of the Bridge, the mint year ‘2015’ on the right in the centre and the mint mark ‘BP.’ below it.

The reverse of the collector coins bears a portrait of Kálmán Széll in the centre. The upper edge is inscribed with ‘TÖRVÉNY, JOG, IGAZSÁG’ [LAW, JUSTICE, TRUTH], his motto defining his years in office as Prime Minister and his entire career, and the lower edge is inscribed with ‘KÁLMÁN SZÉLL’. The dates ‘1843’ and ’1915’, marking Széll’s year of birth and year of death are arranged in two lines on the right in the centre. The initials of designer Balázs Pelcz are placed below the dates.

The coin with a face value of HUF 5,000 is struck in .925 fine silver. It weighs 12.5 grams and it is 30 mm in diameter. The non-ferrous metal coin with a face value of HUF 2,000 is produced from an alloy of copper (75%) and nickel (25%) and it weighs 10.3 grams. Both collector coins have the same size and a diameter of 30 mm. The coins have a milled edge.

From 2014, all precious metal commemorative coins will be issued in a less expensive non-ferrous metal version to benefit collectors who wish to buy the same artistic theme at a more affordable price. By issuing lower-priced versions, the MNB and the Hungarian Mint would also like to encourage younger generations to collect commemorative coins. Accordingly, the silver coin with a face value of HUF 5,000 will be on sale at face value for three months following its issue and the non-ferrous metal coin with a face value of HUF 2,000 will be on sale at a price equal to its face value until stocks last.

The mintage limit of the HUF 5,000 gold collector coin is 5,000 pieces in proof finish. The mintage limit of the HUF 2,000 non-ferrous metal coin in BU finish is 5,000 pieces.

The coins are distributed by the Hungarian Mint Ltd. They will be on sale from 1 October 2015 at the coin shop of the Mint (Budapest, V. ker., Hold u. 17.) and in the Mint’s webshop (http://penzvero.hu/), where a number of collector coins produced from gold, silver and non-ferrous metals issued earlier, are also on sale.
