The Magyar Nemzeti Bank has issued a collector’s version of the 50 forint circulation coin. By issuing the new 50 forint coin, the Bank wishes to draw the attention of society to the importance of national and historical memorial sites, their purpose as well as to the role played by the various sites in history. Two million pieces of the special metal coin will be put into circulation.

The technical parameters of the coin are identical to the 50 forint coins in circulation: it is produced from an alloy of copper (75%) and nickel (25%). It weighs 7.70 grams, it is 27.4 mm in diameter, its edge height is 1.8 mm and it has a smooth edge.

The face value side of the new 50 forint coin is identical to the face value side of the 50 forint coin currently in circulation; the thematic side features a square knot emblem, replacing the usual saker falcon. If held vertically, the emblem symbolises the national memorial sites and, if rotated by 45 degrees, it symbolises the historical memorial sites.

The thematic side of the coin was designed by István Kósa, chief engraver of the Hungarian Mint Ltd.

The new 50 forint circulation coin will be used in domestic cash payments, during everyday shopping. The coins, produced in BU finish, will be available for collectors by way of exchange before they enter circulation at the coin shop of the Mint at 17 Hold utca, Budapest, and at the MNB’s cash desk at 1 Kiss Ernő utca, Budapest, until stocks last.

The collector’s version of the 50 forint circulation coin will also be on sale in decorative packaging: (i) the first day mint (in BU finish) in serial numbered decorative packaging and (ii) as part of the 2015 coin series together with all denominations of the entire circulation coin series (in proof finish) at the coin shop of the Mint (Budapest, V. ker., Hold u. 17.) and in the Mint’s webshop (http://penzvero.hu/).
