Refet S. Gürkaynak.png

Refet S. Gürkaynak is Professor of Economics Bilkent University and the program director of CEPR’s Monetary Economics and Fluctuations group. He is also a Research Fellow of the CEPR, CESIfo, and Center for Financial Studies. Gürkaynak has a BA from Bilkent and a PhD from Princeton Universities, both in Economics. Prior to his current position he was an Economist at the Monetary Affairs Division of the Federal Reserve Board. He is a frequent consultant to various central banks and was a visiting faculty member at MIT.

Gürkaynak’s research interests are monetary economics, financial markets, and international economics. In particular, he has worked on extracting information from asset prices that help answer monetary policy related questions. His research along these lines has been published in journals such as Journal of Monetary Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, and American Economic Review. Gürkaynak has held editorial positions at the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Monetary Economics, and Economic Policy, and has been the recipient of awards from the Central Bank of Turkey, the European Central Bank, and the Turkish Academy of Sciences, as well as an ERC Grant.

WEEK 2

Fabio Canova.png

Fabio Canova is a professor of Macroeconomics at the Norwegian Business School, Research associate with the Centre for Applied Macroeconomics and Petroleum Studies and the CEPR. He is also program director of the Budapest School of Central Bank Studies, and a member of the scientific committee of the Euro Area Business Cycle network.

He  held  the Santander  Excellence  Chair at  Universidad  Carlos  III, Madrid, in 2020;  he was  the  director  of  Training  of the  Florence  School of  Banking  and  Finance (2015-2018), held the Pierre Werner chair in Monetary Union at  the  Robert  Schumann  Center for  Advanced  Studies (2012-2014),  the  ICREA Research  Professorship at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (2006-2012) and has  been Professor of  Econometrics at the European  University Institute (2011-2014) and  Chair  in  Monetary Economics  and the University  of  Bern  (2008). In 2017 he was awarded a honoray professorship from Henin University in China.

He has been a Director the International Association of Applied Econometrics (2014-2017), chair for the European Meetings of the Econometric Society 2014, for the Meeting of the IAAE 2020 and 2021; a panelist of ANVUR in 2013, coeditor of the Journal of the European Economic Association from 2008 to 2013, of the Journal of Applied econometrics from 2012 to 2017 and a referee for ERC, NSF, ESRC research proposals.

Has has taught classes in numerous universities and given professional courses at central banks and international institutions and held consultancy positions with numerous central banks and international institutions. He has published over 90 articles in international journals and his graduate textbook, Methods for Applied Macroeconomic Research, appeared in 2007 by Princeton University Press and translated in Chinese in 2010.

WEEK 3

Vasco M. Carvalho.png

Vasco M. Carvalho is a Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and was previously on the faculty at CREi in Barcelona. Professor Carvalho is a Research Associate at CEPR, a Turing Fellow at the UK's Alan Turing Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, the current Director of the Janeway Institute at Cambridge and a Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge.

Professor Carvalho's research interests are in macroeconomics and networks in economics, with a particular emphasis on production networks. His work has been awarded the British Academy Wiley Prize, the Leverhulme Prize and two European Research Council Grants.

WEEK 4

Kurt Mitman.jpg

Kurt Mitman is an Associate Professor at the Institute for International Economic Studies at Stockholm University, a Research Affiliate of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, and a Research Fellow of the IZA Institute of Labor Economics. He serves as Managing Editor of the Review of Economic Studies, and was previously an associate editor of the Journal of the European Economic Association and Macroeconomic Dynamics. He is a recipient of a European Research Council Starting Grant “Micro Heterogeneity and Macroeconomic Policy.”

His research is focused broadly on macroeconomics, with a particular interest in housing, household debt and default, monetary and fiscal policy, international, and labor market dynamics. Kurt has published his research in top economics journals including the American Economic Review and the Journal of Political Economy. He has briefed members of the Ways and Means Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress and the Congressional Budget Office on his research findings on unemployment insurance.

Prof. Mitman is one of the founding organizers of VMACS—the virtual macro seminar, and has served as an organizer of the Society of Economic Dynamics Annual Meeting, and organizes groups for the Barcelona Summer Forum, the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Economics, and the European Midwest Micro-Macro Conference. He acts as a consultant for Danmarks Nationalbank and the European Commission. He has had visiting positions at Stanford University, the European University Institute, Bocconi University, and the University of Oslo.  He received his BS in Physics from the University of Virginia and his PhD in Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He also studied at the undergraduate level at Cambridge University and at the masters level at Oxford University.
