Orlové-Trencsén, 4 November 2026 – “Cooperation between the central banks in the Visegrád Group countries plays an important role in strengthening stability in the CEE region,” according to MNB Governor Mihály Varga, speaking at the V4 Central Bank Governors Conference organised by the National Bank of Slovakia. Varga highlighted that in the changing global economic environment preserving price stability and anchoring inflation expectations were still the primary tasks of the region’s central banks.
Varga highlighted that, in addition to maintaining price stability, central banks were also focused on long-term economic growth. As he had previously noted, in order to achieve this in the CEE region, it was crucial to promote investments in knowledge and workforce training. According to Varga, the governors of the V4 central banks agreed that to facilitate such investments a predictable economic environment was necessary, which could be jeopardised by both high inflation and economic uncertainty. He emphasised that achieving price stability and anchoring inflation expectations were the central bank’s most important tasks. In this regard, he recalled that this year the MNB had decided to modify its medium-term inflation target from 3 percent to 2.5 percent, effective from 2028. In addition to supporting preserving purchasing power, this change also served to align Hungary’s monetary policy framework with euro area standards. The Governor stated that a predictable economic environment also favoured investments and the creation of high-value-added workplaces, pointing out that investment in knowledge, skills and innovation contributed to sustainable economic growth over the long term by boosting productivity and competitiveness.
