Debrecen, 13 February 2026 – “The MNB’s new management believes that art belongs in museums, which is why we decided to loan the MNB’s collection to 30 museums in Hungary,” according to MNB Governor Mihály Varga, speaking at the opening of the exhibition “Dynamic Structures – From Bank Collections to Museums”. The Governor added that this decision was the result of rationalisation, as the MNB moved towards focusing on its primary objectives as defined by law.

Governor Varga explained that the central bank was best able to serve Hungary’s interests and growth by concentrating on fulfilling its primary objectives to the highest possible standard. For the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, this meant preserving stability and achieving and maintaining the inflation target. As Varga had previously said, this principle was also reflected in the decision to loan more than 1,400 works of art owned by the MNB to a total of 30 museums, with the exhibition now opening in Debrecen featuring over 130 works. The Governor explained that the Bank was returning these works to their natural environment, i.e. museums, where they would be accessible for everyone in the future, thus serving the common interest of the general public and the artists who had created them. He added that these decisions thus benefitted museums, artists and the public.
