Budapest, 17 May 2026 – “The Magyar Nemzeti Bank has awarded the Sándor Lámfalussy Award to Mr Adam Glapińsky, Governor of the Polish central bank,” announced MNB Governor Mihály Varga at the awards gala held on the eve of the Lámfalussy Conference. 2026 marks the 11th time that the MNB has organised this event, which is named in honour of Sándor Lámfalussy, the father of the euro.
Speaking at the awards gala, Varga explained that the MNB’s new management had implemented a new operational model focusing on its primary objective, rationalised its internal operations and bolstered domestic financial stability. He pointed out that inflation had been successfully reduced to the central bank tolerance band in the past year and highlighted that the MNB’s goal was still to anchor inflation, i.e. to stabilise the rate of price increases within this range over the long term. He emphasised that Hungary’s economy now had record-high foreign exchange and gold reserves managed by the MNB, which also served to strengthen stability. Turning to the award recipient, he noted that Governor Glapińsky’s work had contributed immensely to strengthening international – and especially European – financial cooperation and thus stability. He added that Mr Glapińsky headed a central bank with which the MNB had a close relationship. The Lámfalussy Conference will continue on Monday with a professional programme.
