3 September 2026 The MNB’s new management has filed a complaint of suspected breach of fiduciary duty, negligent management, fraud and abuse of office in connection with the loss of value of five properties it owns. The complaint stems from an audit of the operations of MNB-Ingatlan Kft. and the valuations of the individual properties. The audit revealed significant overvaluation of the real estate investments, while appraisals of the properties indicated amounts substantially below their book values. Based on this, the MNB has presumably suffered a financial loss.

In October of last year, the central bank’s new management filed a complaint in relation to the renovation of the MNB’s new headquarters, and these proceedings are now entering the investigative stage. Based on the recently completed audit, taking into consideration the real estate purchases and sales, investment structures and the extent of the higher-than-planned loss of value, the MNB’s new management deemed it necessary to supplement the complaint to include five additional properties: the Balatonakarattyai Oktatási és Képzési Központ (Balatonakarattya Educational and Training Centre), the Bölcsvár (House of Wisdom), the MNB Budai Központ (the MNB’s Buda Headquarters), the MNB Felügyeleti Központ és Pénzmúzeum (MNB Supervisory Centre and Money Museum) and the Pallas Athéné Konferencia Központ (Pallas Athéné Conference Centre), which is owned by Optimum-Omega Ingatlanbefektetési Kft.

The MNB’s new leadership is committed to responsible, transparent governance. To this end, after taking office, it conducted a comprehensive inspection, and reviewed and rationalised the central bank’s operations. Under the new management, the MNB aligns its activities with its statutory mandate, while curtailing operations outside of its purview.
