Péter Benő Banai was born in Cegléd in 1974. After graduating from the University of Economic Sciences (now the Corvinus University of Budapest) in 1998, he obtained a postgraduate specialist diploma in law for economists from Eötvös Lóránd Science University. From 1998 to 2001, he worked as an assistant at the Ministry of Finance; from 2002 to 2005, he served as Head of Division in the Department of Budgetary and Financial Policy before being appointed Head of Department, a position he held until 2010. From the spring of 2010 onwards, he served as Acting Head of Department prior to his appointment as Deputy State Secretary for the Budget at the Ministry of National Economy in the autumn of that year. From 2014 until April 2025, he was State Secretary for Public Finances at the Ministry for National Economy and was subsequently employed at the Ministry of Finance. He was appointed Chief Advisor to the Governor of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank in May 2025. Since 1 December 2025, he has been the Deputy Governor of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank responsible for analyses, payments and central bank programmes.
Current positions: Since June 2025, he has been Chairman of the Executive Board of GIRO Ltd. He also chairs the Supervisory Board of Financial Stability and Liquidation Non-Profit Ltd. Since 2021, he has held the position of Chair and Vice-Chair of the Public Finance Section of the Hungarian Economic Association.
Previous positions: Banai was a member of the Board of Directors of Small Business Development Company Ltd. and DALERD Zrt. He was a member of the Governing Board of the Pension Reform and Debt Reduction Fund, having previously served on the Supervisory Board and later on the Board of Directors of Hungarian Export Credit Insurance Plc. (known as MEHIB). He was a member of the Supervisory Board and subsequently the Board of Directors of the Government Debt Management Agency (ÁKK Zrt.), as well as the Supervisory Board and Chair of the Liquidity Committee of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Hungarian Culture until his appointment as Deputy Governor.
