On 11 April 2008, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank issued a silver collector coin with a face value of HUF 5,000 to celebrate the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

In addition to the standard attributes (the denomination: HUF 5,000, the legend: Republic of Hungary, the mint mark: BP and the date of issue: 2008), the obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Republic of Hungary, superimposed over a wavy line symbolising water.

On the reverse of the coin, below the inscription ‘Games of the XXIX Olympiad’, a water polo player, raising his chest out of the water and preparing to throw the ball, is depicted.

The coin was designed by Gábor Kereszthury.

The collector coin is made of .925 fine silver, weighs 31.46 grams, its diameter is 38.61 mm and it has a milled edge.

The mintage limit is 18,000 pieces, of which 14,000 are produced using the special proof technology.

The coins can be purchased from the Hungarian Mint (Budapest, Könyves Kálmán körút 38) as well as the shop in the Magyar Nemzeti Bank’s Visitor Centre, and are available at face value for three months from their date of issue.
