26 September 2015

The Magyar Nemzeti Bank will issue gold collector coins with face values of HUF 50,000 and HUF 5,000 and a non-ferrous metal coin with a face value of HUF 2,000 to commemorate the 425th anniversary of the first complete translation of the Bible into Hungarian.

The design of all three collector coins will be identical, with the value numerals being the only difference. The obverse of the collector coins features a representation of the Vizsoly Reformed Church. On the right, the coin is inscribed with ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’, with the value numeral and the inscription ‘FORINT’ placed below it in two horizontal lines. The mint year ‘2015’ and the mint mark ‘BP’ are positioned on the left of the representation.

The reverse of the collector coins bears a representation of a ‘V’ initial in a square frame. Outside the frame, the inscriptions from the left to the right read ‘425 ÉVES A VIZSOLYI BIBLIA’ and ’1590 – 2015’. The initials of designer Andrea Horváth are placed on the lower edge, in the centre.

The coin with a face value of HUF 50,000 is struck in .986 fine gold. It weighs 3.491 grams and it is 20 mm in diameter. The coin with a face value of HUF 5,000 is struck in .999 fine gold. It weighs 0.5 grams and it is 11 mm in diameter. The non-ferrous metal coin is produced from copper (75%), nickel (4%) and zinc (21%). It weighs 2.7 grams and has the same size as the HUF 50,000 gold coin. All three coins have a milled edge.

From 2014, all precious metal commemorative coins will be issued in a less expensive non-ferrous metal version to benefit collectors who wish to buy the same artistic theme at a more affordable price. By issuing lower-priced versions, the MNB and the Hungarian Mint would also like to encourage younger generations to collect commemorative coins. Accordingly, the two gold coins will be on sale at market prices and the HUF 2,000 non-ferrous metal coin will be on sale at a price equal to its face value until stocks last.

The mintage limit of the HUF 50,000 gold collector coin is 2,000 pieces in BU finish. The mintage limit of both the HUF 5,000 gold coin and the HUF 2,000 non-ferrous metal coin in proof-like finish is 5,000 pieces.

The coins are distributed by the Hungarian Mint Ltd. They will be on sale from 28 September 2015 at the coin shop of the Mint (Budapest, V. ker., Hold u. 17.) and in the Mint’s webshop (http://penzvero.hu/), where a number of collector coins produced from gold, silver and non-ferrous metals issued earlier, are also on sale.
