The Magyar Nemzeti Bank has issued a gold collector coin with a face value of HUF 5,000, as part of the Smallest Gold Coins of the World collection, and a non-ferrous metal coin with a face value of HUF 2,000 to mark the 150th anniversary of the death Ignác Semmelweis. By issuing the two collector coins, the MNB pays homage to the physician described as the ‘saviour of mothers’, who pioneered the antiseptic principle of surgery and established the practice of aseptic gynaecological and childbirth procedures.emlékérme is kapható.

Both the gold and the non-ferrous metal collector coins are national legal tender. They are of identical design, with the value numerals being the only difference. The obverse of the coins features the compulsory design elements: the value numerals ‘5000’ and ‘2000’ in the centre, with the inscription ‘FORINT’, the mint year ‘2015’ and the mint mark ‘BP’ displayed below them in two horizontal lines. The legend ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’ is inscribed on the upper edge of the coin. The collector coins feature a portrait of Ignác Semmelweis on the left. The dates ‘1818’ and ‘1865’, marking the date of birth and death of Ignác Semmelweis, as well as the initials of designer Szöllőssy Enikő are placed to right of the portrait, on the lower edge. On the right edge the coin is inscribed with ‘SEMMELWEIS’. The coin with a face value of HUF 5,000 is struck in .999 fine gold. It weighs 0.5 grams and is 11 mm in diameter. The non-ferrous metal coin with a face value of HUF 2,000 is produced from an alloy of copper (75%), nickel (4%) and zinc (21%). It weighs 2.7 grams and is 20 mm in diameter. Both collector coins have a smooth edge. From 2014, all precious metal commemorative coins are also issued in a less expensive non-ferrous metal version to benefit collectors who wish to buy the same artistic theme at a more affordable price. By issuing lower-priced versions, the MNB and the Hungarian Mint would also like to encourage younger generations to collect commemorative coins. For this reason, the entire stock of the HUF 2,000 non-ferrous metal coins produced will be offered for sale at face value. The mintage limit of both the HUF 5,000 gold collector coin in proof finish and of the HUF 2,000 non-ferrous metal coin in BU finish is 5,000 pieces. The coins are distributed by the Hungarian Mint Ltd. They will be on sale from 6 November 2015 at the coin shop of the Mint (Budapest, V. ker., Hold u. 17.) and in the Mint’s webshop (http://penzvero.hu/), where a number of collector coins produced from gold, silver and non-ferrous metals issued earlier are also on sale.
