Kornél Szilvay was one of greatest figures in domestic fire-fighting operations and an outstanding expert in the history of technology in Hungary. For him the safety of fire-fighters and preserving the integrity of property had key significance. He patented the Szilvay fire extinguisher to extinct fire with foam or powder on 30 June 1928; and the first high-capacity dry extinguisher was put into operation.
The centre of the obverse of the coin bears a representation of the all-purpose fire extinguisher patented by Kornél Szilvay. The value numeral and the inscription ‘FORINT’ are positioned in two horizontal lines below each other on the upper right edge, with the inscription ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’ positioned along the lower edge. The mint year ‘2015’ and the mint mark ‘BP’ are positioned on the left edge, parallel with the rim and above the fire extinguisher. The design of the obverse of the coin is included in Appendix 1.
The centre of the reverse of the collector coin bears a portrait of Kornél Szilvay surrounded by a frame, with the initials of designer Balázs Bitó in the lower left corner. The coin inscribed with ‘SZILVAY KORNÉL’ on the upper edge, ’A SZÁRAZOLTÁS ATYJA’ on the right, parallel with the rim, and with ‘1890 – 1957’ on the lower right and, parallel with the rim, ‘TŰZOLTÓPARANCSNOK’. The design of the reverse of the coin is included in Appendix 2.
The square-shaped collector coin is produced from an alloy of copper (75%) and nickel (25%). It weighs 14 grams, it is 28.43x28.43 mm in diameter and it has a smooth edge.
The non-ferrous collector coin with a face value of HUF 2,000 can be purchased at a price equal to its face value until stocks last.
The coin is distributed by the Hungarian Mint Ltd. It will be on sale from 24 July 2015 at the coin shop of the Mint (Budapest, V. ker., Hold u. 17.) and in the Mint’s webshop (http://penzvero.hu/), where a number of collector coins produced from gold, silver and non-ferrous metals issued earlier are also on sale.
